The whitish build-up sometimes seen on aquarium equipment is usually either a hard-water or salt deposit caused by evaporating water. This build-up is easily removed using white vinegar and gentle abrasion with a sponge or scrub pad. Vinegar is not toxic in small amounts, but care should be taken to rinse any equipment after cleaning and glass surfaces should be wiped with a clean dry cloth or paper towel.

I have the same problem with my freshwater aquariums. We have really hard water and everything seems to get splashed by the filters. Is there any way to prevent that from happening? I cannot take the lid off of my 10 Gal tank, so I use the vinegar on a paper towel carefully so that nothing goes into the tank. I've put paper towels in the areas that have the white mineral deposit, but they just get wet and then drip down the outside. It would be great if the surfaces didn't get splashed. Thank you
